Resolution on Twining Kingston and Windhoek

On January 9th, 2018, it was unanimously agreed that Windhoek and Kingston be twinned. This was after a joint vote and agreement in support of the bid by THE Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC). The diplomatic channels from Windhoek were on the forefront to witness the twinning. Therefore, the experts expect to see historical and cultural ties between the two cities soon enhanced.

The resolution stated that since the two cities share varies interests in common, the agreement will improve the relationship between the countries. As a result, there is expected increase in local economic development, youth participation, trade and other initiatives.

English is the official language in Namibia, but there are various local languages. Councilor Vernon McLeod who was on the forefront to ensure the resolution is arrived at. He also said that tourism industry in Jamaica was more developed than in Namibia. However, he was convinced that the twinning will lead to the advancement of many sectors in Namibia.

The latest population statistics as of December 2017 revealed that Namibia has a population of 2.5 million people. It is also a former protectorate of Germany.

Councilor Kari Douglas of Jamaica’s Trafalgar Divison and People’s National Party (PNP) representative seconded the resolution. He pointed out that Windhoek is a modern city with beautiful sceneries and well-maintained town. She also expressed her joy after seeing how the city implements the building codes and plan properly. She also emphasized proper implementation of the laid out development programs.

Moreover, Douglas also said that it was necessary to submit the resolution to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development. This would give support for the implementation of the resolutions. Besides, she said that to achieve development for all, KSAMC ought not to be forgotten.

Councilor Eugene Kelly asked the council to present the resolution to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and check if there could be possible business ties.  Eugene Kelly represented Whitfield Division and was also elected on PNP ticket.
